Big news for this weeks OCI Newsletter #11! Oracle and Microsoft have made a deal to enable customers build multi-cloud solutions easier. But that's not all for this week!

New Features


Let's start with the new functionality. Autonomous Databases (ATP & ADW) now support CPU auto scaling! In short when you enable auto scaling it can scale up three times the allocated amount of cores up to 128 which is the max number of cores you can allocate.

You can also monitor the past eight (8) days of the hourly CPU usage. I wonder if you can get notifications when scaling event happens or is this one of those "you don't need to know" events.

In any case this is good development and direction where we should see services being developed into in the future.
You can now setup federation with Microsoft Azure AD, welcomed improvement for OCI , hopefully one of many integrations to come due to earlier mentioned partnership!
It's now possible to delete tags and tag namespaces, finally one might say! I never understood why this wasn't included initially but perhaps on the background there has been some complexities when you delete tags.
And the new Terraform OCI provider v3.28.1 supports previously mentioned new features ATP auto scaling and deletion of tags and tag namespaces. v3.28.0 had some issues with Terraform 0.12 so seems Oracle released quick fix for that issue!

Blogs & News

So then to the biggest news of the week! Oracle and Microsoft have formed a partnership to interconnect their clouds so you can run applications side by side and take benefits from each. Many cross-cloud possibilities with networking, identity & access management etc.
Here is good overview of the interconnect between OCI and Azure. I've been thinking aloud on Twitter that one of the highlighted cases where you would run Autonomous Database on OCI and applications on Azure seems unrealistic but perhaps we would start to see setups like that in the future due to this interconnect. When you start connecting different services from each cloud I think that's where the real benefits will come.
Documentation about the interconnect is here. You can see it's currently only available between OCI us-ashburn-1 and Azure Washing DC regions. Hopefully it will get extended to Europe soon as well!
Official press about the partnership and an article on Reuters about it. Also a good write up on Medium about it, as much as I like to give Oracle hard time I seriously think this is good move for both and will change the way we can deploy solutions in the future.
I stumbled into these level 300 training videos on Exadata cloud. Really good detailed info and what's best, all the slides are available for download as well! If you watch and read them through you will also see the ExaCS REST API & CLI deck, that's a good overview how MUCH you still need to do manually even though you use ExaCS. So whoever is thinking Exadata on cloud will be a walk in the park, that's not going to happen!
Slightly related to OCI, the same hypervisor used in OCI, Oracle KVM is base of newly released Oracle Virtualization Manager. This should potentially ease your possible migration from on-premise to OCI if you are planning on doing that. Implementing it of course is a different story altogether. Hopefully they won't call it Oracle VM?

Tip of the week


Have you wanted to test Oracle Analytics Cloud but setting it up (which is relatively easy if you have an account btw!) has been just too much for you. Well there are OAC sandbox environments in Europe and North America which are available for use.
